Free InBody Scan in Edina — No Membership Required

Come in, get scanned, go through your results with a coach, and leave. No membership, no fee, no obligation.

A body composition scan, free, with nothing attached. Most places that offer an InBody scan charge for it, or require you to join first. We don't do either.

If you live in Edina, Richfield, or south Minneapolis and you want to know what your body is actually made of, you can come to our studio at 6805 B York Ave S, get scanned, sit down with a coach to go through the results, and leave. No membership. No fee. No obligation to sign up for anything.

The scan itself takes under a minute, and the whole appointment is done well inside an hour.

Scans begin in October, when our doors open. Get on the list now and we'll reach out to schedule you as soon as appointments open.

What does an InBody scan cost?

Nothing, here. Elsewhere in the Twin Cities you'll typically pay per scan, or find it bundled into a membership or package you have to buy up front.

We give it away because we think the results speak for us better than anything we could say. If you decide to train with us afterward, good. If you don't, you still leave knowing more about your body than a scale will ever tell you.

What the scan actually measures

InBody uses direct segmental multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. In plain terms: it sends a very low-level electrical current through your body and measures how different tissues resist it. Muscle holds a lot of water and conducts easily; fat holds much less and resists more. From that difference, the machine estimates what you're made of.

You'll get:

Two things worth being straight about, because you'll hear them said wrong:

Fat does not turn into muscle. They're entirely different tissues and neither converts into the other. What actually happens when training goes well is that you lose fat and build muscle at the same time — two separate processes running in parallel. That's why the scale can look stuck while your body is changing significantly underneath it.

A pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same. A pound is a pound. What's true is that muscle is denser, so a pound of it takes up noticeably less room. That's the reason people drop a clothing size without dropping much weight, and it's the reason we don't judge progress by the number on the scale.

Why the scale isn't enough

If you weigh 180 pounds and you weigh 170 pounds three months later, you know one thing: you're ten pounds lighter. You don't know whether you lost ten pounds of fat, or seven pounds of fat and three pounds of muscle, or something worse than that.

Those are very different outcomes. The first one leaves you leaner, stronger, and metabolically better off. The last one leaves you smaller and weaker, with less of the tissue that keeps weight off long term.

This matters more than usual right now for anyone losing weight quickly — including the many people in this area doing it with the help of a GLP-1 medication like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound. Rapid weight loss can take muscle along with fat, and there is no way to detect that from a bathroom scale. A body composition scan is the only way to see it while there's still time to do something about it. We wrote more about this in our guide to strength training on a GLP-1.

What happens at your appointment

We call this a Starting Point Session, and it's what every new person at Alloy Edina Southdale goes through — whether or not they ever become a member.

  1. We talk first. Your goals, your training history, any injuries or limitations, what's worked and what hasn't. Ten minutes, in a private room, not on the gym floor.
  2. You do the scan. You step on the device, hold the handgrips, and stand still. Under a minute.
  3. We go through the results together. Not a printout handed to you at the door — an actual conversation about what the numbers mean for you specifically, and which ones are worth tracking.
  4. A functional movement screen. A short series of movements that shows us how you move, where you're restricted, and what we'd need to work around.
  5. You get a written recommendation. What we'd suggest for training, and where nutrition fits. Yours to keep and use however you want.

Who this is for

How accurate is it?

Honest answer: for tracking change in the same person over time, it's very good. For a single absolute number compared against a research standard, DXA is more precise.

Bioelectrical impedance is sensitive to hydration, recent meals, and recent exercise, which is why we ask you to come in under consistent conditions and why we compare your scans to your previous scans rather than to a population chart. Done that way, the trend line is reliable and it's the thing that actually matters.

About your coach

Brett Jacobson, B.S., ACE-CPT is Assistant Director at Alloy Personal Training Edina Southdale. He holds a degree in Kinesiology and Health from Iowa State and has coached adults in strength and functional training for over ten years.

InBody results are a fitness and body composition assessment, not a medical test or diagnosis. Nothing on this page is medical advice. If you're taking a weight loss medication, decisions about dosing, continuing, or stopping belong with your prescriber. We're happy to share your results with your physician if you'd like us to.

Members get a scan every month as part of small group personal training, where the results guide your nutrition coaching as you go. Joining before we open? See our Founding Membership.

Common Questions

How much does an InBody scan cost at Alloy Edina Southdale?

It's free. There's no fee and no purchase required.

When do InBody scans start?

When the studio opens in October. Get on the list now and we'll reach out to schedule you as soon as appointments open.

Do I have to become a member?

No. The Starting Point Session is open to anyone who wants to understand their body composition, member or not.

How long does it take?

The scan itself is under a minute. The full appointment, including the consultation and movement screen, is done well inside an hour.

Where can I get an InBody scan near me in the Twin Cities?

We're at 6805 B York Ave S in Edina, just off York Avenue near Southdale — convenient to Edina, Richfield, and south Minneapolis.

How often should I get scanned?

Monthly. That's enough to see meaningful change without chasing normal week-to-week noise, and it's the cadence our members' scans follow.

Can I get a scan if I'm taking a GLP-1 medication?

Yes, and it's one of the more useful times to have one. A baseline scan before or early in treatment gives you something to compare against, so you can see whether the weight coming off is fat or muscle.

Is this safe if I have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device?

InBody advises against use with implanted electrical devices such as pacemakers or defibrillators. Tell us in advance and we'll skip the scan and do the rest of the session.

Can I come with a friend or my spouse?

Yes. Book two appointments back to back and we'll run you through together.

Every Membership Starts the Same Way
