Most people wait about two years longer than they should to call a trainer. Not because of money. Because they want to "get in shape first" so they don't embarrass themselves in front of a coach.
That's backwards. It's like cleaning your house before the cleaner shows up.
At Alloy Personal Training Edina Southdale, the first appointment is called a Starting Point Session, and it was built for the exact person who feels that hesitation. Here's what really happens in that hour, so you can stop imagining something worse.
What is a Starting Point Session?
It's a private, no-pressure appointment with a coach. You talk through your goals and health history, then move through a short assessment so we can see how your body actually moves. From there, you and the coach map out a plan built around you. Plan for about an hour, start to finish.
Nothing about it is a tryout. Nobody times you. There's no whiteboard with your name on it.
Will I have to work out?
You'll move, but gently. The assessment is basic movements, things like squatting to a bench or reaching overhead. They let your coach spot stiff ankles, a cranky shoulder, or a knee that needs working around.
Here's a stance we'll defend anywhere: a first session designed to leave you sore for three days is a sales tactic, not coaching. Some gyms use exhaustion as proof of value. We think it mostly proves the coach wasn't paying attention.
What does the coach actually learn about me?
More than you'd expect from one hour. The conversation covers your history: the desk job, the old injuries, the 5:45 alarm. The right plan for a 52-year-old who hasn't trained since college looks nothing like the plan for a lifelong runner with a sore hip.
Our studio also uses InBody body composition scans. It's a quick, non-invasive measurement of muscle mass, body fat, and water balance, and it gives us an honest baseline that a bathroom scale can't. You'll see those same numbers again down the road, which is when things get fun.
What happens after the session?
You get a straight recommendation: what training would look like for you, how many sessions per week make sense, and what it costs. Most adults land at two or three sessions a week, which matches the CDC's guideline of at least two strength days weekly.
Then you decide. If it's a yes, we get you scheduled. If it's a no, you leave with an assessment and a plan in your head, and nobody chases you down York Avenue.
Where is the studio, and when can I come in?
We're at 6805 B York Ave S, one block south of Southdale Center, opening October 2026. Doors will open at 6 AM Monday through Friday, and Saturday mornings from 7 to noon, so before-work and weekend appointments will both work.
If you live in Richfield or south Minneapolis, you're closer than you think. For most of the area it's a straight shot down France or across 66th.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear? Regular workout clothes and sneakers. Bring water if you want it. That's the whole packing list.
I have a bad knee. Should I wait until it feels better? Come in now. Working around a joint that complains is a normal part of the job. Your coach would rather build the plan around it than watch you sit home another six months.
Can my spouse come to the same appointment? Yes — couples are welcome to book together. You'll each get your own assessment and your own plan.
Does booking a Starting Point Session commit me to a membership? No. It's a conversation and an assessment. The pricing talk happens at the end, in plain numbers, and the decision is yours.
